IMAGE OF SELF

Image of Self exhibition celebrates our collective creativity by highlighting artworks created by our participants at Ruth’s Table and our partner communities.

Over the year, Ruth’s Table and Creative Spark have partnered with over 25 elder care providers and local nonprofits, bringing together older adults and adults with disabilities through accessible creative programming. Through art kits, remote and onsite classes, and parallel programming, our participants and teaching artists have created meaningful works that reflect on the themes of identity and representation of self.

Image of Self exhibition features a selection of the resulting works, highlighting the diversity of our elder communities. Whether abstract, symbolic, or intimately detailed, each artwork in the exhibition reveals the artist’s identity, individuality, and story, and aims to celebrate our authentic self as the hero in our own story.

Ruth’s Table would like to express our endless thanks to all our participants and partners. Check out our list of partners below.

Virtual Opening Celebration:
Thursday, December 2 | 3-4pm PT

Online | Zoom

This exhibition is available for viewing at Ruth’s Table gallery until January 21, 2022.

FACES OF RT

I like a place in my imagination where all the favorite things of my life remain.

They can be photographs of people, nature or feelings left from joy and pain.

Going inward to find my voice
Remembering all that came before that brought me here
Owning all parts of myself
With gratitude, love, and joy.

The morning light was soft and gray.
After I woke up, I heard crows in the distance and close to my patio.

The air today feels soft almost pliable. And today I am looking forward to finishing my jigsaw puzzle of fairies and the moon.

I feel strong when I’m supported by loved ones. Tonight when I go to sleep I would like to dream about horses and living in the country.

I grew up in Germany and every so often we would go to Switzerland to ski. I later immigrated to the United States and lived in New York.

I earned my living as a seamstress. I had a small business and I remember making my daughter’s wedding dress. I also used to make clothes for my granddaughters.

My faith, family, and coffee are everything. I wish I could still go swimming (I used to swim every single day).

This collage brings tears of joy to my eyes as it depicts great memories.

My name is Millie. I was born in Minnesota several decades ago.

I love coffee and chocolate (Fudge to be clear). It does not take a lot to please me- just give me a SMILE and I will capture it with a “mugshot”- Now “SAY CHEESE” and there you go!! Here is your souvenir!

It was nice meeting you.

HOME

“It was a beautiful Sunday morning in San Diego, California, and a blissful evening in a village way far away in Kenya, Africa (thanks to the time difference). I zoomed in, sitting at my dining table while sipping a steaming cup of ginger infused tea. My brother on the other end was busy barbequing on the veranda of our family home. This is where we both grew up - a beautiful red brick house surrounded by beautiful Jacaranda trees.

The violet Jacaranda flowers were in full bloom and the horizon depicted a magnificent sunset far behind the mountains. We reminisced on the wonderful childhood memories, and as I sat more than a thousand miles from my brother I could not only smell the barbeque he was preparing, but also the beautiful flowers around him.

It was a riveting experience having to experience the two worlds far apart and then capture everything through my imaginary WINDOW. That was the best day of my life!”

Only love found within.

Memories are made here.

I see my Frida picture as I look out my window on my mountain.
I see all the beautiful bay and buckeye trees.
I hear the lovely song of the tiny bird sitting on the branch of the paper alder. I hear the hum of the hummingbird buzzing around the feeders.
I smell the lingering fog as the sun burns it away. I smell the rosemary and oregano on my porch.
I feel at peace in this spot. This window saved my life during this god awful pandemic.
I feel content now.

My neighborhood is my forest in front of my house. I get up every day, make a cup of tea, take my dogs, and head for my porch swing to watch and listen to the day.

I listen to the beautiful songbirds. I watch for the hawks overhead. I walk and see my garden to see what’s blooming.

I just take it in with my eyes and fill my brain with gratitude…

I see the hood of my Wrangler. Trees flying by and the yellow dotted line on the road disappear.
I hear my tires circulation on the pavement, my engine running, and the windows rolling down.
I smell a hot motor pines vineyards trees.
I feel the movement of the vehicle and wind in my hair and my hands on the wheel.
